Rain drop Stool
Project type
Stool
Date
June 2017

Recently, I came across a stool I built when I was about 16, tucked away and nearly forgotten. It was made for the Royal Highland Show’s handcrafts competition in 2017, and that year’s theme was My Fair Lady. Musicals have never really been my thing, so translating one into a woodworking piece felt like a stretch at first.
But challenges often bring out the most unexpected ideas.
The stool’s seat is shaped like a raindrop, carved from maple—an echo of “The Rain in Spain”, one of the musical’s more iconic moments. The legs, turned from beech, give it a quiet balance. I hand-carved a small cup into the seat to hold a parasol, a subtle nod to Eliza Doolittle and her ever-present umbrella. It felt like a way to bring her presence into the piece without being too literal.
Looking back, I remember how much I enjoyed the process. There’s something strangely rewarding about trying to interpret a story—especially one you don’t personally connect with—through the form and function of furniture. It was more than just a stool; it became a quiet kind of storytelling in wood
